Commentaires : Based on Arthur Laurents’s play “The Time of the Cuckoo”, this was Richard Rodgers first show following the death of Oscar Hammerstein II. Although Sondheim was reluctant to return to writing lyrics to other people’s music, he felt this was a duty he owed the late Hammerstein. In the end it was a collaboration that did not work out, with both composer and lyricist declaring their unhappiness and general dissatisfaction with each other. However, the score ended up with some excellent and lasting songs. “Do I Hear a Waltz” opened on Broadway in March 1965 and ran for a meagre 220 performances. This was it its first professional production in London (though two concert versions and a Guildhall School of Music had been staged earlier.)
